Testosterone, Hormones and Belly Fat After 40: What Actually Matters

The short answer

Testosterone drops slowly as you age, roughly 1% a year from your 30s or 40s. That’s real, but for most men it’s small. The bigger reasons for a dad bod after 40 are usually less movement, less sleep, more alcohol and more food. The good news: those are things you can change.

It works both ways

Carrying more belly fat is linked with lower testosterone. Losing fat often helps your levels come back up. So fixing your gut can help your hormones, not just the other way round.

What actually matters

  1. Lose some fat. A small calorie gap, about 0.5 to 1% of body weight a week.
  2. Lift weights. 2 to 4 short sessions a week. Keeps your muscle, which naturally fades after 40 if you don’t use it.
  3. Sleep 7 or more hours. Short sleep is linked with lower testosterone. This one is huge.
  4. Drink less. Heavy drinking lowers testosterone and adds calories straight to your gut.
  5. Eat enough protein. 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg of body weight a day.
  6. Move every day. Walk the dog, walk the kids to school, take calls on foot.
  7. Manage work stress. Short breaks, walks and training all help.

Do I need testosterone boosters?

Most over-the-counter “T boosters” have little or no good evidence behind them. Skip them and nail the basics.

See your GP for hormone testing

If you have low energy, low sex drive, low mood or trouble building muscle despite doing the basics, see your GP. A simple blood test, usually taken in the morning, can check your testosterone and rule out other causes. Any treatment should be decided with your doctor, not a website.

FAQ

Is my belly caused by low testosterone?

Usually not on its own. Lifestyle is the bigger driver for most men. If you’re worried, ask your GP for a blood test.

Does lifting weights raise testosterone?

Lifting gives a short bump. The bigger win is that it helps you lose fat and keep muscle, which supports healthy levels.

Can I lose my gut after 40?

Yes. The same basics work: small calorie gap, protein, lifting, walking and sleep.
