How Busy Dads Actually Find Time to Train

You don’t find time. You take it.

There’s never a perfect week. Someone is always sick, work is always busy. The dads who stay fit stop waiting for a gap and put training in the diary like a meeting.

Pick your slot

  • Early morning. Before the house wakes up. The most reliable slot for most dads.
  • Lunch break. 20 minutes at a gym near work, or a walk.
  • After bedtime. Once the kids are down. A garage session beats the couch.
  • Weekend morning. Swap with your partner: you train Saturday, they get Sunday.

Remove friction

  • Have your shorts by your shoes. Lay out gear the night before.
  • Train at home if travel time is the problem. A pair of dumbbells or a kettlebell in the garage works.
  • Follow a plan, so you’re not deciding what to do when you’re tired.

Make it short

20 to 25 minutes, three or four times a week. See Is 20 Minutes of Exercise Enough?. Consistency trumps duration.

Bring the kids in

Park workouts while they play, pram walks, carrying them on your shoulders. It all counts, and they see you making health a priority.

Have a bad-week plan

Newborn, sick kids, crunch at work? Drop to two short sessions and daily walks. Something is better than nothing. Avoid the all or nothing trap.

Talk to your partner

Agree on your slots together. It’s easier to protect time when you both know the plan.

FAQ

What if I only get 2 sessions a week?

Two is still worth it. Full-body sessions with big moves cover the basics.

Is training at night bad for sleep?

For most people it’s fine. Finish an hour or so before bed if you find it keeps you up.

I’m wrecked from no sleep. Should I still train?

Go lighter and shorter. Moving usually makes you feel better. Skip it if you’re truly exhausted or sick.
